Thanks for a successful Sealant Day

Annual Sealant Day was held Saturday March 10th. from 9- 3 PM. We again had our volunteer project at Shoreline Community College's Dental Hygiene Clinic. They generously allowed us to use the facility at a minimal cost. Several fabulous companies and dentists have made significant donations. There were lots of highly appreciated volunteers, plus a special Kudos to the Shoreline faculty and staff for supporting.

Clydene Evans-Wenzel organized this tremendous Sealant Day for GSDHS this year. We treated 86 children with each child having an individual appointment time; a significant feat in itself. Clydene really out did herself with all the advertising through school districts, PTA's and community outreach programs. She almost doubled the number of children seen since the 2011 Sealant Day. About $28,650 worth of free dental care was provided. Additionally we tracked treatment with the following results:

  • 431 sealants placed
  • 84 fluoride treatments provided
  • 17.5% had untreated decay
  • 20% had not seen a dentist/never been to a dentist in more than two years.

The volunteers were enjoyable to work with. Breakfast/ Lunch nibbles were organized by Gail Arshon and she even competed for check out time when Costco had an electricity failure. A gift basket was raffled off. Vickie Laer, RDH was the winner. We gratefully acknowledge the generosity of the following companies and individuals for the materials were provided by:

  • Clinpro Sealant Material Fabulous (pink on placement/white when cured) donation was facilitated by Mark Konings at 3M
  • MI Recaldent Fluoride Varnish donation was facilitated by Tom Meintz at GC America Inc.
  • Henry Schein and representative Mark Kennedy
  • Dr. Pamela Sursely from Totem Lake Smiles
  • Mark Hegeberg from Crest Oral B
  • Kristi Graham from Burkhart
  • Dr Mike Velling
  • GSDHS funded prizes, toothbrushes , toothpastes and paid the cost of marketing the event, rental of facility and additional necessary supplies.

THANK YOU TO ALL OUR FANTASTIC VOLUNTEERS
