Low income clinic needs volunteers
The Haller Lake Christian Health Clinic is in great need of volunteer dental hygienists and dentists. GSDHS is combining efforts to help this organization help those in need. Please call 206-363-4105 to offer your help. You should indicate whether or not you have expanded duties or only practice traditional hygiene. They need both.
Clinic Administrator Diane Steward writes:
The Haller Lake Christian Health Clinic (HLCHC) is a non-denominational free clinic that was established in 2003 to offer hope and healing to low-income individuals in the North Seattle community who are without access to health care because they do not have health insurance. Its mission is to provide quality compassionate health care to this population.
The clinic provides primary medical, basic dental and mental health counseling services. Our emphasis is on caring for the whole person: physical, emotional/mental and spiritual. With our current volunteer base, we are able to provide approximately 660 patient visits annually.
The clinic operates two half days weekly from a 1,500 square foot section of North Seattle Alliance Church that was remodeled by volunteers to become a health clinic with a reception area, two medical exam rooms, two dental chairs, and a nursing station/laboratory.
We provide these core services:
- Medical: Medical exams, prescription drugs, laboratory tests, x-rays, nutritional classes, and referral to a medical specialist when medically necessary.
- Dental: Dental exams, x-rays, cleaning, fillings, and for major restorative dental work, referral to resources within the community that are willing to work with low-income patients.
- Professional Counseling: by referral from an HLCHC health care provider.
- Spiritual: For patients who request it, prayer and spiritual counseling are available.
Haller Lake Christian Health Clinic is assisted by many others in our goal to serve the low-income uninsured population.
- In 2005, LabCorps, a for-profit laboratory, donated $16,000 in laboratory services to our patients.
- Northwest Hospital provides x-rays at no charge.
- Another local hospital (which asked to remain anonymous) has donated medical equipment for our second medical exam room.
- Patterson Dental Supply donated the second dental chair and local dentists donated another mobile dental unit, as well as instruments and supplies.
- Seattle Surgical Repair has repaired equipment for us at reduced costs.
These donations have allowed us to set up and maintain the second medical exam room and dental chair at greatly reduced costs.
